Going Out

Museums
  • National Gallery Prague
    • Your best bet for a broad art collection in Prague. Lots of classic artists’ lesser-known works. The institution has many buildings throughout Prague. You can get a 10-day pass for ~$20 which will allow you into any location. Check the website to see what’s where in case it piques your interest.
  • National Museum
    • A thorough and well-designed survey of Czech history spread between two buildings at the top of Wenceslas Square – plan to spend several hours here. The beautiful neo-renaissance interiors are nearly worth the ticket price alone (the location where Mission Impossible was shot).
  • Museum Kampa
    • Modern art from central Europe. Houses many pieces by František Kupka, one of the founders of abstract art.
  • Czech Museum of Music
    • Interactive exhibits, including unusual instruments from the 18th century onward. One of my favorites, but I’m biased.
  • Museum of Communism
    • A deep dive into life during communism in Czechoslovakia. The only drawback is the exhibit involves a lot of reading, but the information is illuminating. It also has a very “Western” point of view.
  • National Technical Museum
    • Check out the many exhibitions on vintage vehicles, old astronomical instruments, coal mining, and more.
  • DOX Centre for Contemporary Art
    • Excellent contemporary art exhibitions.
  • Speculum Alchemiae
    • Underground tunnels for alchemical labs from the 16th century. It’s 200czk for a 30-minute tour, but I think it’s worth it.
Dancing
  • Lucerna – 80’s and 90’s dance nights and live music shows
  • Vagon – live music, fun cover bands, free entry for DJ show with pop music after midnight
  • Vzorkovna – huge and unique underground space with a grungy atmosphere and fun shows. Lots of football tables and young folks dancing. Be prepared for the very rude dudes at the gate.
  • Altenburg 1964 – techno party on a boat, what else to say? (Only open in summer)
  • Cross Club – one-of-a-kind steampunk-style venue for high-quality electronic music acts.
Classical Music

  • Municipal House – art nouveau interior, home to Prague’s symphony.
Jazz Clubs

  • Agharta Jazz Club – 14th-century underground cellar with wonderful acts right near the old town square.
